In this build, we’re working on a curved pod structure, where the cabinetry and paneling need to follow a smooth radius from the inside and the outside. This is where our in-house CNC capabilities allow us to create designs that most cabinet shops simply can’t.
Why Curved Cabinetry Requires a Custom Approach
Standard cabinetry is built in straight lines. But when a project calls for rounded corners, curved walls, or radius transitions, every piece must be engineered to bend precisely without breaking or losing structural integrity.
For this project:
The frame includes rounded corners
The outer skin must follow that exact curvature
The material needs to be flexible but still strong
That’s where precision CNC cutting comes in.
Using CNC to Create Flexible Panels
To achieve the curve, we use our CNC machine to cut grooves into the back of each panel.
These grooves:
Allow the material to bend without cracking
Maintain structural strength on the visible side
Let us match the exact radius of the structure
We tested multiple variations to dial in the perfect flexibility:
Interior Panels
Cut with a 1/8” ball-nose bit
Narrow grooves for maximum structural support
Smaller radius, so less flexibility required
Exterior Panels
Require a wider groove spacing
Larger radius = more flex needed
Tested 1/4” and 3/8” cuts to achieve the right bend
This type of testing and refinement is only possible because everything is done in-house at Solle—from design to fabrication.
